YOUTH WORKSHOP JUNE 25 - 26
Chez Studios is excited to present
A Two Day Youth Workshop
with Mitchell Gossett
June 25 - 26, 2016
Chez Studios presents a YOUTH workshop designed to guide young actors and parents. For Actors 6 to 20's.
We love having Mr Gossett come to Atlanta. He continues to lead one of the best Youth Acting workshops offered any where and with this brings the high level professional experience you and your young actor will learn from. The list of young rising talent he represents is long and filled with working actors.
Mitchell will also have a 30 minute Q & A for Parents offered with each session.
“Prepare for spontaneity: get out of your head and into your body”
In this acting lab Mitchell explores which physical action is explored and shown to be more expressive of the actors instrument and how it connects to material in a richer more interesting way than the thought process alone.
We all know that the mind is an essential part of the actor’s instrument, but we also know what happens when an actor gets stuck “in their head.” Their body and voice is stiff and full of tension, their work feels dry and over-rehearsed, and their acting choices are predictable. In short: they’re cut off from the full range of their expressiveness. They’re acting “from the neck up.” And whatever was truly unique about them as a human being, as an actor, is lost.
Mitchell’s lab is designed to lead participants out of their heads and into the whole of their actor’s instrument. When actors are freed from the tension that comes from over-thinking and relieved of the obligation to “lock down” their acting choices and go for the exact same result over and over, the impact is incredible. They connect to material in richer and much more interesting ways than they would have through thought process alone. By working on scenes and monologues and inserting physical activity no matter how seemingly unconnected to the scene it is, the actors and the class SEE what happens to the actors delivery of text and how it also often nears the truth of the scene.
“The only thing you have that no other actor in the world has – is YOU.”
Mitchell believes that the most exciting way to explore material is not through thoughts alone, but through “ACTIONS” – through what you are DOING with your body. Bringing ACTions into the work creates a stronger, more visceral connection to the material. But as importantly, it also provides a means of showing the most unique feature any actor can present: THEMSELVES in the work.
It is through physical activity that the instrument best shows who the individual actor is and what they uniquely bring to the role and material. Yes, the actor must use their intellect and imagination to understand a character’s objectives. But Mitchell’s lab is a creative space where actors are taught to see this as simply step one of the process. Understanding a character and their objectives and desires is not a destination: it’s a gateway. From there, Mitchell helps actors put all of that work into their bodies, into concrete physical actions.
In the best cases, when these physical actions reflect the character’s objectives, the result is distinctive and meaningful work that quickly distinguishes the actor as someone who knows what the “work process” is. This kind of work separates the actor from others in a clear and demonstrable way, especially in auditions.
